"HPI check" has become the everyday name for a used-car history check, the way people say Hoover for any vacuum cleaner. Only one company is actually HPI. The rest are separate providers pulling from the same official and industry databases. Whatever the brand, the job is the same: check the paperwork behind a car before you hand over any money.

This guide explains, in plain English, what a check like this actually shows, what it cannot tell you, and whether the headline guarantees you see advertised would really pay out for a private buyer. The stakes are real. Around 1 in 4 used cars has outstanding finance, which means the lender can legally repossess it even after you have paid the seller. Roughly 1 in 7 shows signs of a clocked odometer, and about 1 in 6 has been written off or badly damaged at some point. None of that shows on a test drive.

In short: a history check covers the paperwork risks you cannot see, outstanding finance, theft markers, write-offs and mileage discrepancies. It does not check the car's mechanical condition or damage that was never recorded, so pair it with a viewing. And read any guarantee carefully: some are trade-only, and even the consumer ones are heavily conditional.

What is an HPI check?

An HPI check is a background check on a vehicle's history and provenance. "HPI" is a brand name that became shorthand for the whole category, so when a seller says a car "has a clean HPI", they usually mean it has passed a vehicle history check from one of several providers, not that particular company.

Every paid provider draws on the same core sources: the DVLA for registration and tax details, the DVSA for MOT history, and the finance and insurance industry registers for money owed and write-offs. That is why most providers return broadly the same underlying facts. What differs is the price, how clearly the results are presented, and any extras on top, such as a market valuation or an AI health score.

The key thing to understand is what kind of check this is. It is a paperwork check, not a mechanical inspection. It tells you what the records say about a car's past. It does not tell you whether the clutch is on its way out. You need both: the history to screen out the deal-breakers, and a viewing to judge the condition.

What does an HPI check cover?

A full paid check covers the risks you cannot spot yourself. The important ones are:

If you are not sure how to read the results, our guide on how to check a used car before buying walks through what to do with each finding.

What do the write-off categories mean?

Insurance write-offs fall into four categories, and they are not all equal:

Cat S and Cat N cars are legal to buy and sell, but the marker stays on the record permanently, and a Cat S car can be worth 20 to 40 per cent less than an equivalent undamaged one even after a good repair. About 500,000 vehicles are written off in the UK each year, so you will see these come up. For more detail, see our guide on whether Cat S and Cat N cars are worth buying.

What an HPI check does not cover

This is the part most guides skip. A history check reads the car's paperwork. It does not inspect the car. Three things it cannot tell you:

Mechanical condition. A check will not reveal a tired gearbox, a slipping clutch, worn suspension or an engine that smokes on a cold start. That is what a viewing, a test drive and, ideally, an independent inspection are for.

Damage that was never recorded. If a previous owner repaired accident damage privately without involving an insurer, there may be no write-off marker at all. A clean history is reassuring, but it is not proof the car has never been hurt.

Data gaps. A check is only as complete as the records that exist. Reading the full MOT history alongside the check, looking for repeated advisories and mileage that jumps around, catches things a single data point can miss. Our guide on spotting clocked mileage shows how.

Do these checks come with a guarantee, and does it protect you?

Guarantees are the most misunderstood part of vehicle checks. The headline figure is not the whole story, and the guarantees are not all the same.

Some checks are backed by Experian's AutoCheck Data Guarantee. Read its terms and you will find it is available to the motor trade, not to a private individual buying a car for themselves (that is condition 6.1). So if a check relies on that guarantee, a private buyer could not claim on it at all.

Other providers run their own separate schemes that do cover private buyers, but the conditions are strict. Typically you must have bought from the registered keeper at the address on the V5, checked the seller's identity, and paid a fair price. And they usually exclude mileage, valuation and the logbook check from cover, which are some of the things buyers worry about most.

So before you trust a big number, check whose guarantee backs the report and whether you would actually qualify. A guarantee only pays out if the data was wrong and you met every condition. It is not a substitute for seeing the records and walking away from a bad car.

How much should an HPI check cost, and the cheapest way to check?

Prices range from free to around £20 for a single report, but the core history data comes from the same official and industry sources whatever you pay. A £20 report and a £4.99 one are largely the same facts, presented differently.

The free GOV.UK MOT history service is genuinely useful for MOT results and mileage, but it shows no finance, stolen or write-off data. For that, you need a paid check.

PlateInsight is built around that gap. You get a free check first, covering full MOT history, an AI health score, red-flag analysis and how the mileage compares to similar cars. Then, for £4.99, you unlock the finance, theft, write-off and salvage records, a market valuation, the ownership history and an AI buying verdict. If we cannot generate your report, you are refunded, and if you have a question, a real person answers, usually within one working day. For a full side-by-side of the providers, see our best vehicle check UK comparison.

You don't need a £20 HPI check to spot the big risks. Run a free check now, then unlock the finance, write-off & stolen check for £4.99.

Frequently asked questions

What does an HPI check show?

It shows the paperwork behind a car: outstanding finance, whether it is recorded as stolen, any insurance write-off and its category, mileage discrepancies, the number of previous keepers, and whether it has been scrapped, imported or exported. It does not assess the car's mechanical condition.

Does an HPI check show if a car has been written off?

Yes. A paid check flags insurance write-offs and their category (Cat A, B, S or N). Around 1 in 6 used cars has previously been written off or badly damaged, and roughly 500,000 are written off each year, so it is one of the most valuable parts of a check.

Does an HPI check pick up clocked mileage?

It flags discrepancies between the mileage on record and what the seller shows, and roughly 1 in 7 UK used cars shows signs of clocking. It cannot catch a rollback that was never recorded, so read the full MOT history too.

Do HPI checks come with a guarantee, and does it cover me?

It depends on the provider. Checks backed by Experian's AutoCheck Data Guarantee are trade-only by their own terms (condition 6.1), so a private buyer could not claim. Other providers cover private buyers but only under strict conditions, and usually exclude mileage and valuation. Read whose guarantee it is and whether you would qualify.

Can you get an HPI check for free?

Not the full check. The GOV.UK MOT service is free but shows no finance, stolen or write-off data. PlateInsight gives you a free check (MOT history, health score and red flags), then unlocks the finance, theft, write-off and salvage records for a small fee.

The bottom line

Do this: run a check before you buy. It reveals the finance, theft, write-off and mileage risks you cannot see on a test drive, so you can walk away from a bad car before any money changes hands.
Know this: it checks paperwork, not mechanics. Pair the history check with a proper viewing, a test drive and, for an expensive car, an independent inspection.
Do not: rely on a guarantee to protect you. Some are trade-only, and the rest are heavily conditional. Seeing the records is what keeps you safe.
Do not: overpay for the same data. The core history is the same whatever you pay, so there is no need to spend £20 to see it.

An HPI-style check is one of the cheapest ways to avoid an expensive mistake. It will not tell you everything, no check can, but it surfaces the paperwork problems that cost buyers the most: finance that follows the car, a hidden write-off, a clocked odometer. Run a free check on any car you are considering, read the full history before you view it, and only pay to unlock the finance, theft and write-off records on the ones you are serious about.
