Short answer: HPI Check is better for UK-only cars. CarVertical is better for imports. If you want the cheapest option that covers the same UK data, both are more expensive than they need to be.

When HPI Is the Better Choice
You're buying a UK car and want financial protection. HPI's full check comes with a £30,000 finance guarantee. If you buy the car and undisclosed finance turns up afterwards, HPI covers you. CarVertical doesn't offer anything similar.
The seller knows what HPI is. "I've run an HPI check" carries weight. Sellers and dealers recognise the name. CarVertical is less well known in the UK, so mentioning it won't have the same effect during negotiations.
You only need UK data. For a car that's been registered in the UK its whole life, HPI's stolen and finance checks are more thorough. HPI checks the Police National Computer directly and has strong coverage of outstanding finance agreements through UK lenders.
You're checking 3 cars. The MultiCheck at £29.99 for three cars (about £10 each) is decent value if you know exactly which three cars you're viewing. That's cheaper per check than CarVertical even at its multi-buy price of £20.99 each.
When CarVertical Is the Better Choice
You're looking at an import. If the car spent time registered in Germany, France, Poland, or another EU country, CarVertical can pull damage records, service history, and ownership data from those markets. HPI only covers UK records. For an ex-German BMW or a French-market Peugeot, CarVertical is the only option with meaningful data.
You want historical listing photos. CarVertical shows photos from previous online listings. If the car was advertised before with different bodywork or in a different condition, those photos surface in the report. Useful for spotting undisclosed repairs or resprays.
You're buying across borders. If you regularly buy cars from European auctions or importers, CarVertical's cross-border data is genuinely unique. Nobody else offers it at this level of detail.
The Pricing Problem
Both are expensive, but for different reasons. HPI's cost reflects the £30K finance guarantee. CarVertical's reflects international data licensing and heavy influencer marketing spend — if you've watched any car content on YouTube, you've almost certainly seen a CarVertical promo code. Those sponsorships aren't cheap, and the cost shows up in the per-report price.
Most serious buyers view 5-10 cars before committing. On HPI, checking 10 cars would cost around £100 (even using the MultiCheck deal). On CarVertical, you'd spend £360 at full price, or £210 at the best multi-buy rate.
That's where cheaper alternatives come in. For UK cars, every provider pulls from the same core databases: DVLA, MOT history, Police National Computer, and finance registers. The data overlap between a £5 check and a £20 check is substantial.
| Service | What you buy | Total cost |
|---|---|---|
| PlateInsight | 5 free credits on signup + 25-credit pack | £5.99 |
| HPI Check | 5 individual checks + 1 full check | ~£70 |
| CarVertical | 5 individual reports (no basic option) | £105-£180 |
The Third Option Most People Miss
You don't have to choose one service for everything.
Run cheap checks on every car you're considering. PlateInsight costs £0.30 per basic check and includes an AI health score that benchmarks the car against others of the same make, model and age. It also runs a critical issues forecast that tells you when brakes, suspension and other components are statistically likely to need work, based on 261 million MOT records.
Once you've narrowed down to your top pick, run a full background check (stolen, finance, write-off). On PlateInsight that's £5.99 (the 25-credit pack).
If the car costs over £15,000 and you want the guarantee, add HPI on top. If it's an import, add CarVertical. You end up spending less overall and getting more data than either service alone would give you.

Our Verdict
UK car, want the £30K finance guarantee: HPI Check (£19.99 full). The guarantee is genuine financial protection on expensive purchases.
Importing a car from Europe: CarVertical (£35.99, or £20.99 each for 3). Nobody else pulls damage records from Germany, France or Poland.
Best value for most UK buyers: PlateInsight. Screen every car on your shortlist at £0.30 each with AI health scoring, then run the full stolen, finance and write-off background check on your top pick for £5.99. That covers everything HPI and CarVertical cover. The only reasons to add HPI on top are if you specifically want the £30K finance guarantee, or CarVertical if the car was previously registered in Europe.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is HPI or CarVertical better for UK cars?
HPI. It costs less (£19.99 vs £35.99), checks the Police National Computer directly for stolen vehicles, has better UK finance data coverage, and offers a £30,000 finance guarantee. CarVertical's advantage is international history, which doesn't help if the car has always been in the UK.
Why is CarVertical so expensive?
Two things: international data licensing and influencer marketing. CarVertical spends heavily on YouTuber partnerships (you'll have seen the discount codes), and that cost gets baked into the per-report price. For UK-only cars, you're paying for European data and marketing spend you don't need.
Is there a cheaper alternative to both?
PlateInsight offers a full stolen, finance and write-off check for £5.99 (25-credit pack), plus AI health scoring and a critical issues forecast that neither HPI nor CarVertical offer. The trade-off is no £30K guarantee and no international history.
Do HPI and CarVertical use the same data?
For UK records, there's overlap. Both access DVLA and MOT data. HPI has stronger UK coverage for stolen vehicles (PNC) and outstanding finance. CarVertical adds European data sources that HPI can't access.
